Supermarket Sweepstakes Shopping-Cart Dash

On your mark. . . Get set. . . Get your tickets for the Trumansburg Rotary Club’s Supermarket Sweepstakes shopping-cart dash! The possessor of the winning ticket, or his or her fleeter-of-foot designee, will have three minutes to tear through the shopper-free aisles of the Trumansburg ShurSave supermarket, grabbing goodies from shelves, refrigerators, and freezers, loading them into a shopping cart, and getting that cart to the front of the store – plenty of thrills and, hopefully, not too many spills.

Of course, there are a few rules: Eligible goods are groceries only – no alcohol, tobacco, or pharmaceutical products. The winner can select one of each item (for example, one sirloin, one ribeye, one porterhouse steak, but not a stack of six porterhouse steaks, multiple packages of cheddar cheese, or an entire box of chicken noodle soup cans.) The winning contestant is not required to stop if they spill or knock over something – Rotarians will pick up after them.

Tickets, priced at $5 each, are on sale at the ShurSave’s service desk, and from Trumansburg Rotarians. The final event will take place on Tuesday, April 24th, at 6:30 p.m. Last year’s winner, Fire Chief Jason Fulton, delegated his wife, Edie, as runner; she toted up nearly $600 worth of groceries in her dash.

Proceeds from the event support local and international causes. Trumansburg Rotary has contributed to the Trumansburg Food Pantry, Ulysses Christmas Bureau, Chris Bond Memorial Scholarship, the Ecuador Artificial Limb Project, Hospicare, Cornell Cooperative Extension (Youth Bureau) Movie Nights and Rocket Week, Finger Lakes Runners Club, Trumansburg Fire Department, American Legion (collection of supplies for soldiers), World Vision, Trumansburg Winter Fest, Big Friend Little Friend, and Toys for Tots among others.

Guitar and Uke Weekend Workshop and Public Concert

Instructional acoustic music workshops for aspiring musicians for the weekend of April 27-29, 2012 at the Conservatory.

The workshops will be led by experienced instructors, who have published instructional materials, and are international performing/recording artists:

Del Rey, Seattle
Ernie Hawkins, Pittsburgh
John Miller, Seattle

Del will be teaching her “Blue Uke” class (she has a unique approach to blues and ragtime on the ukulele). Ernie and John will both be teaching guitar. Pat Burke, a local Ithaca musician, will also be an instructor. Pat plays the blues/ragtime/roots guitar style that we’ll be focusing in on at this workshop. He performs solo and is a member of the Evil City String Band. The registration site for the weekend workshop is http://flgg.us. The price for the instructional workshop is $300.

In addition to the instructional workshop, we’ll be hosting a public performance at TCFA by our instructors Saturday evening April 28, starting at 7:30PM. Advance tickets will go on sale soon for $17. Price at the door will be $20. All workshop attendees get in as part of their workshop fee.

Saturday, March 31, 2012, from 3:00 p.m.- 7 p.m.
At Regional Access

Great Local Foods Network is sponsoring a fundraiser, “Celebrating Great Local Foods”, on Saturday, March 31 from 3 :00– 7:00 p.m. at Regional Access featuring music by The Sim Redmond Band and Kambuyu Marimba Ensemble. Food will be offered along with a terrific selection of local wines and beer for sale. Additionally, there will be a live auction conducted by Peggy Haine along with a silent auction for the entire event. Tickets will be $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the door. Tickets will be available at Regional Access.

Proceeds will be used:

To fund the Bakemobile, a singular, trailerable, community-built wood fired oven to be used to educate and engage the community in the local foods movement through demonstration and creation of delicious breads, pizzas, baked and roasted food highlighting the benefits of cooking from scratch. The Bakemobile will provide a local foods outreach and connection to a range of audiences at many public and community events. Plus, the Bakemobile will be just plain fun for all!

To continue to develop programs for local food producers such as providing microloans, health insurance, education and mentoring events, building stronger communications and strategies to assist our local food community to grow and develop with local support.

Help us with a donation:

Please consider donating an Auction item to help fund special projects for the Great Local Foods Network. We are looking for a range of things to offer either at our Live or Silent Auction. Consider giving us art, crafts, CSA shares, use of a vacation house, a farm tour and dinner with the farmers, a musical performance, custom designed stationery, a case of wine, a gift certificate for a terrific restaurant, a home baked birthday cake or cupcakes, a localvore picnic for 8, a handknit sweater or mittens, a handmade birdhouse….you get the idea. Please consider all of your own talents, and send something wonderful our way to help suppport our local food community.

Please contact Alan Vogel at tburg22@gmail.com or 607-592-4892 by Monday, March 19th to let him know what you can provide. Please check www.greatlocalfoodsnetwork.com for updates and news on this event.
